Greensboro is a city in the state of North Carolina that also serves as the county seat of Guilford County. It has the distinction of being the biggest city in the Piedmont Triad metropolitan region. In 2003, the former Greensboro – Winston – Salem – High Point metropolitan area was re-defined and separated into 2 parts. These are the Greensboro – High Point metropolitan statistical region and the Winston- Salem metropolitan statistical region. When the very first European explorers arrived in the future site for Greensboro, they found it inhabited by a Siouan speaking tribe named the Saura.
Quakers from Pennsylvania arrived here in the mid 18th century, and went on to establish a settlement called Capefair. After the American Revolutionary War, the settlement was renamed Greensboro in honor of Major General Nathanael Greene who led the American forces against the British in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. In the final days of the US Civil War, Greensboro played a leading role in the Confederate government. At this period, Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President, and his cabinet moved to Danville, Virginia. Yet when the Union soldiers began to pose a threat to this city, Davis and his cabinet shifted to Greensboro. The city is now recognized as being the final seat of the Confederate government, and has being referred to as the last capital city of the Confederacy.
